Miami SPEC Course

Course Description

In this third session of the course, we will build on our work from the first two semesters and delve deeper into the theory and practice of promoting SPEC in our organizations and with community. Students will take an active role in designing the course and leading some sessions. Based on course information and on input from participants, we will explore ways of advancing the well-being of our organizations, clients, stakeholders, and community members. We will utilize theory and research on group dynamics and organizational change to envision and create engaging and enabling structures within our organizations that can advance well-being. We will watch videos, engage in role plays, analyze case-studies, and learn a host of practical, hands-on skills for promoting well-being. The course will evolve based upon the emerging needs and interests of participants as we engage in the process of change in each of the participating organizations.

Reading Reflections

You will write 4 short reflections on the assigned readings that you will post to the group SPECway blog. You get to choose which weeks you want to write the reflections, but you must turn in a total of 4 in the 14-week period. The posts should be the equivalent of 1-2 pages (max) double-spaced (500 words). This is a chance for you to critically reflect on all of the readings for that day addressing such questions as: How do the readings connect to SPEC? How do the readings connect to what is happening in your organizations? What are the implications for your practice or organizational change? Reflection papers are to be posted 48 hours before class. You are expected to read and comment on your classmates’ posts before class.

Presentations

You will join with at least one other person in class to present on the day's topic. These presentations are an opportunity to summarize the readings and use them as a jumping point for further exploration. We’re expecting that you will bring in your own resources on the topic and share peronsal and organizaoitnal experiences.
