POSITION: Youth Development Specialist/Organizer (Temporary)
 
POSITION SUMMARY: The Youth Organizer is responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of Urgent's work with high school age youth, including all programming, advocacy, training and organizing. The Youth Organizer will work directly and extensively with teens.
 
HOURS: 15 hours per week, schedule varies, generally 5 hours, three days a week between 1-6pm and some weekends
 
COMPENSATION: $14-17/hr based on experience and education

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Identify, train and support youth leaders to develop their own organizing efforts and take action on issues impacting their communities 
• Develop and maintain technology for Organizing activities, including systems for disseminating policy updates and calls to action
• Maintains data on public policy pages of the website-updating quarterly
• Network with local and regional organizations to generate support of organizing efforts
• Build relationships with funders, schools and other organizations which can provide training, funds, and other resources 
• Facilitate conversations where youth members are developing and carrying out issue campaigns, devising organizing strategies, preparing and implementing public "actions," getting media coverage for events and other related activities 
• Submit written material to Executive Director in timely fashion, e.g. reports, data, evaluation forms, assessment forms, work plans 
• Participate fully in the shared work of Urgent, Inc. including neighborhood events, staff retreats/meetings, fundraising efforts and other projects as they arise
 
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
• Strong experience in and understanding of organizing with youth from low-income neighborhoods 
• Experience in crisis intervention and advocacy with teens 
• Ability to train, support and mentor youth leaders
• Knowledge of systems with which teens interact (school, police, juvenile justice, etc.) 
• Excellent communication skills 
• Ability to work as a member of a team and promote teamwork 
• Direct experience with Miami Dade Public Schools as a former student, teacher, or in some other capacity
• Campaign-based organizing experience
• Bilingual
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision 
• Facilitation skills 
• Mature/positive attitude, creativity and resourcefulness
• Prior experience with Constant Contact a plus.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Agreement with Urgent, Inc. mission, philosophy and approach
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, computer skills; knowledge of website technology 
• Detail-oriented with good research skills 
• Flexible schedule for weekend and evening meetings, events or trainings a must!!
