Miami SPEC Class Collaborative Blog
Collaborative blog for participants in the SPEC Course at the University of Miami.
This is the group blog for the Miami SPEC project. We'll mainly use this blog to reflect on our SPEC class readings, but as as the project continues, we'll explore other ways to utilize this technology. Click "add article" to create a post (you'll need to log in first).
SPEC Class Reflection Paper Instructions: You will write 4 short reflections on the assigned readings that you will post to the group SPECway blog. You get to choose which weeks you want to write the reflections, but you must turn in a total of 4 in the 14-week period. The posts should be about 500 words. This is a chance for you to critically reflect on all of the readings for that day addressing such questions as: How do the readings connect to SPEC? How do the readings connect to what is happening in your organizations? What are the implications for your practice or organizational change? Reflection papers are to be posted 48 hours before class. You are expected to read and comment on your classmates' papers before class.
CHI's "t-team" continues to forge forward with ways to improve our organization through SPEC-ie projects
At the most recent SPEC t-team meeting, the group agreed that communication remains as a major challenge, among staff. Now that we are well along our way to informing staff about the very basics of SPEC, the party doesn't stop there! The decision was made to devote the entire month of July to improving communication through several initiatives to include: e-mail blasts, the CHI Newsletter, a traveling poster presentation AND MARGARITA MONDAYS; an event where we hope to demonstrate to staff...

As I think back on our past three semesters (!) of the SPECs project, I am amazed at how much we discussed, dissected and learned....yet the surface was barely scratched! What I remember most is the candor, the insights and REAL issues surfaced and discussed. As I mentioned several times, for me, the class was truly a "relief" valve .... frustrations aired are still frustrations, but at least I was able to capture perspectives and suggestions from others. Switchboard of Miami, Inc. has been a proud participant in the SPECs project for many reasons. While our summary is just that, we feel it is important to note just how important this involvement has been as we continue to build and grow our organization while dealing with unprecedented issues.
Immediately prior to the hiring of the new CEO, Switchboard experienced the deaths of two staff members - one sudden, the other after a long illness. These passings bookended the departures of several senior and other key staff members. Until the new CEO came on board, staff were compelled to keep things afloat albeit without direction. As life takes me down a new and different path - my experiences during the SPEC class have given me tools to equip me for this new phase of my life.
The UM SPEC class has been a unique opportunity for me for many reasons.
